Oral Procedures

LeFort 1 is a type of procedure that occurs in the upper jaw. During LeFort 1 surgery, the upper jaw is separated and repositioned. Once separated, the upper jaw can be moved in any direction to correct the issue. LeFort 1 surgery is performed entirely inside the mouth, so there will be no visible scar on the face.

Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO) is a type or procedure that occurs in the lower jaw. During BSSO surgery, the lower jaw is separated and repositioned. Once separated, the lower jaw can be moved in any direction to correct the issue. Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy is performed entirely inside the mouth.

Patients who need LeFort 1 or Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO) Surgery may experience one or more of the following problems:

  • A small upper jaw, with or without a prominent lower jaw, and upper teeth sit behind the lower teeth.
  • A small lower jaw with lower teeth that sit behind the upper teeth.
  • Front teeth that do not touch.
  • Upper teeth that show too much when smiling.
  • Asymmetric or titled jaw causing offset teeth.

What To Expect

If you are undergoing a LeFort 1 and/or BSSO procedure at St. Cloud Surgical, know that your upper and lower teeth will be held together by dental bands. Patients are discharged on a no-chew diet.  Swelling and pain may occur post-operatively.
